You can’t go 5 minutes without hearing about the Polar Vortex sweeping the nation. But this cold chill isn’t really the big news.
The big news is that people are living on the streets in these subzero temperatures. While you’re busy thinking about whether or not your pipes will freeze, there are people whose bodies will freeze to death tonight.
One person can’t save the world, but one person can make a difference. There are small things we can do to help those in need. I know a lot of people don’t like to give money to charities because they worry the funds will be misused.
You don’t have to donate money to make a difference.
You can donate your time, your compassion, your food or your clothes.
Find a local soup kitchen and volunteer. Donate food if you can’t sacrifice the time. Donate coats you rarely wear to a place like One Warm Coat.
I know how easy it is to get caught up in what we don’t have, but if you’re reading this, then in all likelihood you have a warm bed to sleep in tonight, which is more than most people.
Be grateful for that and show you’re grateful by doing something nice for someone who needs your help. It doesn’t matter why they need your help. Don’t think about that. Just know that they need it.
Be kind. Be compassionate. Love and give.
